Q. Dr. Dinsmore, tell us about the Breath Enhancement Place. What type of service do you offer?
A. The Breath Enhancement Place is a division of the Artistry Dental Group and is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of bad breath. We are the only location for this service m Boulder. People who suspect that they have chronic breath odors come to us for help. We use a Halimeter to measure gases in the mouth. The visitor simply breathes into a straw attached to the machines which in turn, generates a number on a screen. The number indicates the level of gases, called volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), that may be caused by periodontal breakdown, a digestive problem or a systemic condition such as sinusitis. We can treat problems that originate in the mouth with a powerful oxidizing agent which breaks down the VSCs. This agent, called chlorine dioxide, may basin the form of a mouthwash, toothpaste or gel. Patients are given a simple maintenance program to follow. If the problem is non-oral, we refer visitors to other health practitioners.
Q. How common is bad breath?
A. About 25-90 million people suffer from this embarrassing problem. About 80% of the time, halitosis has its source in the mouth and the severity of the problem tends to increase with age. Oral causes may be related to diet, decreased flow of saliva, gum disease, smoking and/or alcohol consumption. Broken teeth and fillings may contribute to the problem.
Q. Why don't over-the-counter mouthwashes work?
A. Most of those treatrnents tend to mask the odors for a short period of time but do little to eliminate mouth odor at its sources, by destroying VSCs. The first step in the treatment of chronic bad breath is a thorough and proper diagnosis.
Q. How much does the diagnosis cost?
A. We offer a free diagnosis to first-time visitors.
Q. Dr. Dinsmore, in addition to the Breath Enhancement Place, what other services do you offer?
A. We use the latest technological advances to help make visitors comfortable and feel safe, in what for many, may be a stressful environment. For example, a computer imaging system can show how cosmetic treatments will affect your smile. We can show patients the condition of their teeth on overhead video by using a pen-sized video camera. A video frame can be frozen and printed out to help the patient better understand recommended treatment. Patients with fearful anxieties are given visualization techniques and a menu of options to make their visit more relaxing. We also detect Gum Disease at the very earliest stages with a thermometer device that allows for full reovery and less cost.
Our overall approach is preventive in nature. We help patients improve their dental habits and educate them on proper dental hygiene so future visits are short and infrequent. We test your home water free for its flouride content. It is our goal to help everyone in the family have healthy and attractive smiles. If you are interested in caring and careful dentistry, please call me personally with your questions.
