As a therapist, Doreen Orion involves herself in an active process with her clients. "I do more than listen and offer support, although both of those are important," she says. "It's my job to interpret, to give feedback and to put what the client says into some context so he or she can learn from past experiences to make some changes." As a psychiatrist, Dr. Orion can complement psychotherapy with a full spectrum of treatment, including a biological evaluation and medication if needed. "I can prescribe medication when necessary, but in most cases I prefer to work within the therapeutic process to see if the client can improve without it." Her education reflects her lifelong interest in the interface between psychology, nutrition and biology; her degrees in nutrition and in medicine give her tools to supplement therapy with dietary and medical recommendations. After all, the mind is not separate from the body. "It's intricately connected," she says. When the body is working optimally, therapy is even more effective.

Dr. Orion's skill in the interface between the mind and body is particularly important in the treatment of PMS, eating disorders and depression. But therapy is effective for much more. If people are not happy, whether in their relationships, work or just with themselves, it's important to understand that there are always reasons for the unhappiness." Therapy can help uncover hidden patterns and unconscious reasons why the patterns are repeated. Often these patterns began in childhood. "As children, we are 100 percent not responsible for what happened to us, but as adults we become 100 percent responsible for our own happiness and for making the necessary changes in our lives," she says.
